Bakuchiol – A New, Kinder Retinol For Your Skin

Retinol has been the gold standard in anti-aging skincare for many years.   It has been one of the most widely researched skin solutions.

But why has this vitamin A derivative been generally marked as the MVP by the beauty industry?

Well, for starters, it has been hailed for its benefits such as accelerating skin cell turnover.  This helps to smooth out those fine lines and wrinkles on your face.

Other skin improvements would include a brighter skin complexion and a more even skin tone.

But here is a question for you.

What if I told you there was another fascinating product available that would tout the same benefits as retinol WITHOUT any irritating retinol related side effects?

Well, shockingly there is such a compound.

A natural ingredient by the name of bakuchiol (pronounced “bah-koo-chee-all”) offers a gentler alternative in skin improvement without the potential irritation often caused by retinol.

What Exactly is Bakuchiol?

Bakuchiol is a plant-based extract found in the seeds of the plant Psoralea corylifolia (often called Bakuchi).

It is a well-known skincare ingredient in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. It’s been said to provide the following skin benefits like retinol:

  • Reduce appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Brighten the skin
  • Minimizing the appearance of pores
  • Strengthen collagen

First, in order to understand bakuchiol, it helps to know the way retinol works.

What is Retinol and How Does It Work?

Retinol is also known as vitamin A1.  It is a vitamin found in food and is also used as a dietary supplement.

Retinol is a powerful ingredient that gets absorbed into your skin.   It is metabolized in the body to its active form called retinoic acid.

The retinoic acid binds itself to receptors within the cells.  This speeds up the production of new skin cells.   This quick intensity of the peel sheds the top layer of skin.

It generally exposes the pores leaving a clear and fresh skin complexion.

You might be wondering, what is the problem with using retinol on your skin if it provides such benefits.

Ironically, retinols fast process of skin renewal maybe its biggest pro and also its biggest drawback.

Let me explain.

The Retinol Side Effects

When the skin sheds so extremely, it often causes major irritation.

Intense retinol formulations in skin products and treatments are known to cause a lot of flushed faces.   After use, you may notice that there are dry patches, flaky skin and redness on the skin.

“Many people don’t follow due care and direction and wrongly use too much too soon, or use without a proper moisturizing cleanser and a hydration gel beforehand to help create a barrier,” says dermatologist Dr Patrcia Mckenzie.  “This leads to skin aggravation and the retinol consumer gives up – not willing to continue – before it can create a proper, positive impact on the skin.“

 It gets worse.

Retinol Side Effects

Photo-sensitivity is another drawback of retinol use.  Sunlight breaks down the retinol and deactivates it.   This may increase your skin’s sensitivity to UV rays.

Therefore, you can forget about using it during the day.   Retinol is limited to nighttime use only.

Use extreme caution if you plan on using retinol with your other favorite skincare products.  Retinol combined with exfoliators and benzyl peroxide may cause more skin irritation.

Also, don't try and use it after skin procedures after dermaplaning. Your skin is vulnerable after such treatments.

Tip: Patience is key when practicing DIY skin care at home.   Always introduce new products slowly to the skin.  A patch test on a small area on the skin is generally a wise idea.

Now let’s take a comparative look at both bakuchiol and retinol.

Bakchiol Benefits Vs. Retinol

While structurally different than retinoids, bakuchiol targets skin cells the same way as retinoids.

In 2019, findings published in the British Journal of Dermatology suggested that bakuchiol could offer proportionate skin-boosting benefits to synthetic retinol BUT without the redness, peeling and irritation that many consider retinol’s one downfall.

So, it should come as no surprise  that bakuchiol is putting an entirely new imprint in the beauty industry.

“This plant-based compound does not have any structural similarities with retinol, but the various studies have shown that both of them function in very similar ways, producing the same genetic expression in the skin, which, importantly, bakuchiol does without the bothersome irritation,” explains dermatologist Dr. Andrew Webster.

In another 2018 clinical study conducted by UC-Davis dermatologists, the efficacy and side effect profiles of bakuchiol and retinol were comparatively tested.  The testing piloted through a random, double-blind assessment for facial photo-aging.

During this 12-week study, published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, 44 patients were asked to apply a bakuchiol 0·5% cream twice daily or a retinol 0·5% cream daily.

Now without getting too detailed on the study, here are some facts.

A facial image and diagnostic system was used to obtain and analyze high-resolution photographs of patients at specified intervals of 0, 4, 8 and 12 weeks.

Patients were also asked to complete their tolerability assessment questions to review any potential side effects.

In addition, a board certified dermatologist was exclusively assigned to the study.   The role of the professional was to specifically study group assignments, grade skin pigmentation and visible redness.

The results were impressive for bakuchiol.   Its effectiveness was just as good, if not better than retinol.

The study’s authors stated that bakuchiol showed:

Significant improvement in lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, elasticity, firmness and overall reduction in photo-damage.

During the study, bakuchiol usage did not cause problematic side effects common with retinol.

Bakuchiol is Safe To Use

Experts consider bakuchiol to be a superior replacement for retinol for people with sensitive skin.

Bakuchiol has not been shown to increase photo-sensitivity the way retinol does.  Therefore, it can safely be used in the morning as well as the evening.

“Bakuchiol  is photo stable, so will never lose its effectiveness when exposed to sunlight and – because it’s a potent antioxidant – it can even help free radicals made by ultra violet rays, “ explains Webster.

It can also be used to treat other skin conditions such as acne and hyper-pigmentation.

According to Dr. Debra Jaliman, a Board Certified Dermatologist in New York, the use of Bakuchiol  does not have to stop during pregnancy. "She says, "Bakuchiol is a natural compound so it's safer to use during pregnancy. "

Dr. Jaliman further explains:

Although the retinol you find in most skin care products is derived from Vitamin A, it has been manufactured in some form and some feel it may be harmful.  For those with skin sensitivities to retinol or are looking for something completely natural, bakuchiol is a great alternative.

 So, what's the bottom line?

Bakuchiol vs Retinol Pro's and Cons

Jasclair Bakuchiol Serum

Luckily for us, its easier than ever to get the remarkable benefits of bakuchiol.

You can use it in an oil, pad or a serum form depending on pure preference.  The daily use of the bakuchiol serum should be in any skin care routine.

It is safe to use, even after you dermaplane your skin.

Jasclair has tapped into the natural, unique and protective compounds of this special plant using a special extraction method.

Jasclair Bakuchiol Serum

The Jasclair Bakuchiol Serum is specially formulated with a power-packing combination of bakuchiol plant extract, vitamin c, hyaluronic acid and Matrixyl ® peptide.

Each unique ingredient in our serum has its special purpose to improve the skin complexion and fight signs of aging

You can typically find these compounds individually in an oil, serum, or another product.  It can become a massive financial strain to continually buy these formulations individually.

And furthermore, it can become cumbersome to use each of them daily in your skin care routine.

That is why we included all of these key unique ingredients in our proprietary Bakuchiol serum.

It’s easier than ever to get the full benefits from the 4 compounds in one master solution.

Earlier, we have gone over bakuchiol and its benefits for the skin.

Now let’s briefly go into each of the other three ingredients that make up the serum.

Special blend of the age-defying serum.

Bakuchoil Serum with Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid and Matrixyl Peptie

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful anti-aging oxidant.   It should be used regularly.

It can make a major difference in your skin tone. That is why we have included it in this formulation.

The concentration of vitamin C in this serum helps stimulate collagen production, repair signs of sun damage, and brightens age-spots and hyperpigmentation.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic is a superstar in the beauty scene.  And for good reason.

It is a naturally occurring substance in the skin.

The hyaluronic acid can hold a large quantity of moisture.   It keeps our skin hydrated and firm.

However, with time, our skin starts producing less and less hyaluronic acid.  This results in the loss of skin firmness and elasticity.

The good news…the hyaluronic acid contained in this facial serum will help to hydrate and replenish the skins moisture.

The result…a more youthful appearance.

Matrixyl ®

Matrixyl ® is a peptide called palmitoyl-pentapeptide 3.  Most peptides affects are often short-lived to last only an hour after application.

But Matrixyl ® is different than other peptides used in skin care products because of its long-lasting results.

The sole job of Matriyxl is to specifically target and stimulate collagen production and to repair damage. This function reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, leaving the skin firmer and tighter, smoother and more youthful looking.

What does this all mean for your skin?

The Jasclair Bakuchiol age-defying serum is powered by this flora and its phytonutrients and antioxidants.

Its calming, anti-inflammatory botanicals provide natural skin protection from environmental stressors.

The serum moves fast to deliver potent benefits deep within your skin.

The result?

A clear skin complexion with an ageless appearance with continued and regular use.

Bakuchiol Is Here to Stay

The astonishing benefits are clear.

The conclusion of several studies confirmed that bakuchiol can effectively function as an anti-aging compound.

It is a natural, more skin-friendly powerhouse alternative to retinol with the same benefits and without those annoying retinol side effects.

By using the serum daily, your skin will flourish more than ever.

A pro tip to supercharge the absorption of the serum into the skin is to use a dermaplaning tool on the skin prior to applying the serum.    The dermablades will exfoliate the skin which will provide a clean base for the serum to be applied.

It will be fully nourished with bakuchiol, hyaluronic acid, matrixyl ® and vitamin C.

Bakuchiol serum should STRONGLY be considered to be added to your skincare routine.

Are you ready to turbo-charge your way to awe-inspiring skin with Bakuchiol?
